Julianne Peck has been a Guest at TerraLuna since April, 2024 and we'd like to get to know her a bit better.
What brought you to Pilates and how long you've been practicing?
I was looking for something to try in the yoga or Pilates realm when my friend from out of town was visiting! I happened upon the "first class free" at TerraLuna and have been going ever since. I'm very injury-prone and also self-conscious, so I'd always been nervous about group workout classes. I felt immediately comfortable at TerraLuna and I've been taking classes for about a year and a half now! I even got a Reformer at home so I can keep moving even when my schedule doesn't allow me to get up to a class.
Do you have a goal you'd like to share that Pilates helped you/is helping you obtain?
Pilates has helped me to gently and consistently increase my activity level over the past year and a half. About 2 years ago, I went from being an inpatient nurse to an outpatient job which is much more sedentary, and my body and energy noticed the difference. Pilates has been a really safe and effective way to make sure I can fit some movement in, wherever I'm at physically.
What class(es) have you/do you take? Do you have a favorite class?
I love the Saturday morning Reformer class. There's great energy and Lynelle often throws in a few spicy surprises! I'm also a big fan of Jump Lite, and StretchLates for a little chill time!
What is an activity which was difficult for you in the beginning but is now easier?
Everything. When I started I was coming from a kind of strength training, max-out kind of mindset and I went so hard that I was sore for a week! I've learned to control my range of motion and stabilize everything so much better using my core as I've gotten stronger.
Tell us about props! Favorite and least favorite.
I don't think I have a favorite or least favorite, I feel like I'm consistently learning new and fun prop activities! Spiky ball under the lower back is a great challenge, as well as using the dowel rod in the hand straps like a handlebar.
If you had a "Signature Activity" what would it be?
I like moves where you stand on the Reformer, like speed skater. I also love a weird plank and had so much fun last Planksgiving doing the one where I had hands on shoulder blocks and feet on footbar. And monster stretch is a must-do for me too!
How do you define "wellness"?
Wellness is really multi- dimensional to me. It encompasses feeling fulfilled and balanced with the mental, physical, emotional, and interpersonal aspects of one's life.
Would you share a little-known fact about yourself?
I am fluent in Spanish! I have a BA in Spanish and where I really learned to speak was while working at a Mexican restaurant during college. I also studied in Colombia for 6 weeks to obtain my degree!
After many years of few opportunities to utilize this language skill, I recently brushed up and obtained a certification to speak Spanish with my patients at work.
Finally, what is one food/drink you cannot live without?
Iced almond milk lattes (though I often go for a decaf) and potatoes!
Thank you Julie, for sharing a bit about yourself and your Pilates journey!
