Guest Spotlight: Meet Shari

Shari Botts has been a Guest at TerraLuna since September, 2022 and we'd like to get to know her a bit better.

What class(es) have you/do you take?

I take the Reformer classes.

Would you share with us your Pilates story and how long you've been practicing Pilates?

My neighbor told me about Terra Luna in September 2022, and I immediately signed up for the free Introductory class, fell in love, and purchased the Aether plan so I could start attending 2 classes per week, and I haven't stopped since. 2022 was the beginning of a journey for self improvement, and I was focused on trying new things! I'm glad (and proud) that I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new! The picture is from Goat Yoga - also something new I had been wanting to try and finally got to in October with Lynelle!

What is an activity which was difficult for you in the beginning but is now easier?

Where to start? Everything is easier. . . . . my posture is better (without even thinking about it - other people notice it); my core is noticeably stronger, making walking, climbing, sitting, etc. easier. And who knew I could do all of those planks? But I have to say the biggest thing is getting over the fear. . . fear that my vertigo would kick in, fear of falling, fear of not being able to get into some of those plank positions! So my fear has lessened, making the challenge of new things easier! Another member once said, feel the fear and do it anyway! I loved that!

Do you have an activity that you currently struggle with? If so, what are the challenge that you experience?

I struggle with actually putting my legs straight up in the air. I have strong legs (we call them inherited freakishly strong legs in my family), but I lack flexibility, and have osteoarthritis in my knees, so it makes it difficult and uncomfortable. This is probably why the leg straps are my favorite - they help me be able to actually have straight legs - and I've noticed gradual improvement over time.

Tell us about props! Favorite and least favorite.

Favorite prop - hand weights - I want to strengthen my upper body.

Lease favorite prop - the f-ing ring of fire (I don't think I need to say anything more. . .

if you know, you know).

If you had a "Signature Activity" what would it be?

I love the Peter Pan stretches, and, of course, flexing after every accomplishment!

Do you have a goal you'd like to share with us or perhaps a little-known fact about you?

A goal is my continual journey of self improvement and doing new things! A little-known fact is that I always wanted to be a drummer; I got a kit and started taking lessons when I was 54!! We are never too old to try new things!

Do you have words of wisdom to share with other Guests?

My general life philosophy is to Laugh too much!! Look for the laughter every day. Laughter has so many health benefits; it truly is the best medicine. A favorite quote - "A laugh is the shortest distance between two people".

Finally, what is one food/drink/item you cannot live without?

Have to go with top 3 (the order changes on a daily basis): coffee, cupcakes, bourbon.

Thank you Shari, for sharing a bit about yourself and your Pilates journey!
