Guest Spotlight: Meet Melanie

Melanie Farler has been a Guest at TerraLuna since July, 2022 and we'd like to get to know her a bit better.

What class(es) have you/do you take?

I currently attend the Reformer and Beginner’s Reformer classes. I am excited to say that I just signed up for a Jump Board class and the Athletic Reformer class. I’m not sure what to expect but I am looking forward to the challenge.

Would you share with us your Pilates story and how long you've been practicing Pilates?

I took the introductory class at the end of July. I loved the workout and immediately knew the benefits would be substantial so I decided that Pilates needed to be a permanent part of my exercise program.

What is an activity which was difficult for you in the beginning but is now easier?

I had been having shoulder issues when I started Pilates. I play pickleball and my shoulder hurt so much that I was having a hard time hitting a groundstroke and an overhead stroke caused pain to shoot down my arm. I also could not sleep on my right side. So, when I started Pilates I could barely do the I arm exercise and I could not even position my arms for the Y and T arm exercises.

After several weeks of Pilates I started to notice that the pain in my shoulder was not as severe. I could play pickleball without the excruciating pain and I was able to sleep on my right side again. Pilates was the only change that I had made to my routine so I knew that Pilates was providing amazing benefits.

Do you have an activity that you currently struggle with? If so, what are the challenge that you experience?

Due to the shoulder pain I do struggle with all right arm exercises. But there has been tremendous improvement. I am easily doing the I arm and Y arm exercises and improving with the T arm. I now look forward to all arm exercises because I know that the benefit is worth the challenge.

Tell us about props! Favorite and least favorite.

So far I have loved all of the props. They provide an additional challenge and keep my mind focused on doing the exercise properly. I do really like the spikey ball.

If you had a "Signature Activity" what would it be?

My Signature Activity is using the box on the Reformer to stretch and do pullups. Since I have made it known that this exercise is a necessary part of my shoulder routine Lynelle has kindly made a point of including this activity in every Pilates class I attend. I do apologize to anyone who does not like this activity.

Do you have a goal you'd like to share with us or perhaps a little-known fact about you?

My Pilates goal is to regularly participate in a variety of classes.

Do you have words of wisdom to share with other Guests?

Don’t be afraid to try something new.

Finally, what is one food/drink/item you cannot live without?

Water and unfortunately ice cream. I probably should not admit that!

Thank you Melanie, for sharing a bit about yourself and your Pilates journey!
